how generational silence can unwittingly condemn new mothers
Completed in July 2026, this hand embroidery focuses on how generational silence can unwittingly condemn new mothers to the same maternal mental ill health as the women who came before them. The gagged and bleeding Russian dolls, symbols of enduring motherhood and fertility, are decorated with toxic yew, nightshade and oleander flowers, all of which look beautiful while being deadly. However, the most prominent doll has ripped off her gag, finding her voice and breaking the cycle. She blooms with roses while her real features finally come to life.
The piece is one of a series about my experience of post-natal depression and PTSD as a result of birth trauma.
